The Middle of Anywhere (2023)

A video essay as the final project for an English class.

George Eliot’s Middlemarch is a novel about the universality of emotions and experiences, commonalities we all share, our middle ground. In this video essay,  I explore Eliot’s fraught relationship with her native region in the English Midlands and argue how that informs the thoughts and decisions of characters in Middlemarch.

It is an amalgamation of paintings, images, and archival footage from the Midlands, as well as my own footage of Ohio’s landscape. This is also partly a love letter to Ohio.
